Karen H.-- Christmas in October

PPPPPPPPPPPPPP

Hi!
Just thought I'd send you a picture to add to the HP Quilt blog! Believe it or not I finally quilted the rest of my Christmas Placemats from so many years ago! I saw the challenge on the blog awhile back. I came across them when I was cleaning out a cupboard in my sewing room aka laundry room and thought I ought to get them finished. The question now is who gets to use them? We've almost doubled the number of placemats we need so I guess we'll have to share or time it right when only 8 (or less) of us are eating! Thanks for not giving up on me dear friends! Karen H.

OK ladies,
So, the Friendship Scrap Block posed a challenge for some of us yesterday. Life is not always perfect and we found that the assembly sequence was flawed for this block.

Try working from the inside out as follows:

Create the four different 3 1/2 inch center squares.
Assemble the four 3 1/2 inch center half square pieces to form a 6 1/2 inch square block.
Sew two of the small triangles together to form a larger triangle stitching along the 3 1/2 inch sides. The new large triangle should measure 6 1/2 inches along the base and about 4 3/4 inches on the other sides. ( see illustration below)
Next, sew the new large triangles to the center square along the 6 1/2 inch side to form a 9 1/4 inch square.
Finally, you can add the large triangles on each corner to form the 12 1/2 inch block.

10:30 a.m. June 18th at the church. See you then.....

H. P. Quilters

For those of you who were not in attendance today, April 23rd, Stephanie taught us a technique for sewing together half-square triangles. Today's block, Churn Dash, required two-- 4 7/8 inch squares of one fabric and two-- 4 7/8 inch squares of another fabric. Steph had us make two odd pairs using both fabrics with right sides together. Next you need to draw a pencil line diagonally from one corner to the other of each pair. Begin stitching a scant seam using that line as the edge (as if it was actually cut) and then do the same thing on the other side of the line. You will end up with a pencil line in the center and two seams on either side a scant quarter of an inch away. Now you can cut the square--you guessed it--along the pencil line. Press your four squares open and trim them each to measure 4 1/2 inches.

Next month is the Friendship Scrap Block and you can find it at the Quilters Cache if you click this link: http://quilterscache.com/F/FriendshipScrapBlock.html

We will meet on Wednesday May 21st at 10:30 a.m. at the church!! I will send a follow up email next week with specific instructions for cutting your fabrics.

Quilt Blocks 1 and 2

You should have all of your fabric chosen and soon-to-be-cut.
Call Stephanie if you need further help.

Our next meeting is on FEBRUARY 20th at 10:30 a.m.
You will learn many tips for sewing your blocks.
We want you to be successful!!

I went ahead an assembled by first two blocks. I used fabric from my stash in two color motifs: RED, WHITE and BLUE and RED, OFF WHITE and BLUE.
It was fun and really not that hard.
You can do it, don't give up!!
